Writing technical documentation in the field of healthcare is a challenging and demanding job due to both complexity of the subject matter and the responsibility associated with it. Society for Technical Communicators

The largest professional organization for technical writers working in a wide variety of fields offers certification of three tiers to reflect the different professional milestones a tech writer can achieve. The high-tier certification cannot be obtained without getting the lower-level ones. All three certifications have to be maintained through being constantly update on new educational materials provided by STC. The three levels of certification are discussed below.

Foundation

The initial level of certification is the Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC) Foundation. It is designed to assess whether the applicant has the basic understanding of the field to be capable of becoming an efficient member of a tech writing or tech communication team.

The test applicants must pass to become certified is based on the Technical Communication Today textbook. The test is a comprehensive one aimed at challenging the applicant to show their expertise in 9 areas crucial for any practicing technical writer whatever the subject matter of their projects may be.

Practitioner

The next step in the certification is the practitioner certificate that can be obtained only by the holders of the Foundation level certificate. This program focuses on adding leadership competencies to the basic expertise on how to perform the tasks of a tech writer. In other words, this certification level shows that the professional possesses sufficient knowledge of best practices and understands the ways in which they can be implemented.

This expertise enables the Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC) Foundation to take active part in decision making processes within a team of tech writers and even take the lead in the activity.

The same textbook as for the Foundation level is used to pass the course for this certificate.

Expert

The last tier of the program presupposes that the applicant already has a vast portfolio of completed high-level projects and expert interviews. It takes several years to advance from the Practitioner to Expert level. The Expert certificate can be seen as a prestigious collate rather than mere acknowledgement of professional skills.
